SATTAL ; WHERE NATURE REPLACES PEOPLE:
Sattal or the ‘Seven Lakes’, refer to a cluster of interconnected freshwater lakes which are the Sita Taal,
Ramtaal, Hanumantaal, Sukhataal or Bharataal, Luxmantaal, Garudtaal, Nal Damyantitaal, and Purnataal are
nestled within Pine and Oak trees. It’s a birdwatching and photography paradise, with over 500 species of
the Himalayan Migratory Birds. Around 2500 species of butterflies spotted throughout the year.
Nested in the Bhoomi Of Uttrakhand, the place offers a unique blend of a scenic and quite lush green valley with
doorstep adventures like kayaking, river crossing, a zip line and even duck and fish gazing and feeding at its shores.
Unlike Nainital, where car horns and people hustle bustle the town, Sattal is blessedly peaceful and quiet. There’s
a hush of nature with the dwindling pine and oak trees here, the chirping of birdsongs, rustling leaves,
the pedle of boats, quacking ducks or the splash of a fish that composes a natural progressive trance music.
This is the kind of place you come to when not only your body but your soul too needs a deep breath.
Sattal was formarly a tea plantation garden of the British which was among the four plantation gardens,
hosted by the British in the Kumaon Region of Uttarakhand. The British often campared the natural beauty
of Sattal with Westmorland in Britain.
Sattal is unique and is well known for its rich flora, funa and biodiversity. It is known to be a birding paradise
and supports a number of local and migratory birdlife. It has more than 500 species of resident and migratory birds,
20 species of mammals, over 2500 species of butterflies and over 11,000 species of moths, beetles, bugs and other insects.
The flora covers a wide and diverse range of plants, ferns, fungi, medicinal herbs and shrubs. Each individual lake has
its own unique Diatom index and are all linked to the epic tails of Mahabharata and Ramayana. In general the Trophic
Diatom Index is nothing but a way to assess the water quality and the ecological status. The unique birds of Sattal
include the kingfisher, pied woodpecker, grey-capped pygmy woodpecker, brown-fronted woodpecker, stripe-breasted woodpecker,
yellow-crowned woodpecker green-tailed sunbird, black-throated sunbird, and the common wood pigeon.
Sattal hosts a variety of fish Mahseers, Tor, the Himalayan Trout and the Cat Fish and a variety of rock clinging fish are found at the shores of the lakes.
Nainital & Shiva Tandava Stotram
Only 20 km from Bhimtal, Nainital is a hill station with breathtaking views, shopping at Mall Road, and boating at Naini Lake. Visit Snow View Point and Eco Cave Gardens before returning to our homestay in Bhimtal. A perfect base for exploring Nainital and other nearby tourist gems.
It is believed that the enchanting lake of Nainital is formed from the ‘EYES OF GODDESS SATI’. Lord Shiva after the death of Goddess Sati, in grief, agony and pain carried her body, before performing the powerful cosmic dance! Undisputed Ravan, filled with pride after his victorious attempt to lift MOUNT KAILASH (Now Called The Kailash Mansarovar), the home to ‘Lord Shiva’ and to move it out of his path.
The ‘RESONANCE OF LORD SHIVA’, who was then at a meditative state of mind, placed his BIG RIGHT TOE on ‘MOUNT KAILASH’, crushing the fingers of the right hand of RAVAN and turning the colour of his hand to palced blueish green. RAVAN in agony cried out ‘RAAV’ or ‘RUDRA’ a sound that echoed throughout the universe. For years, months & days RAAVAN chanted ‘Shiva’s Name’, 10008,1008 & 108 times respectively. He even composed a STOTRAM to PLEASE SHIVA called ‘THE SHIVA TANDAVA STOTRAM’, not the hymn for the weekend but A HYMN PRAISING HYMN not HYMN BEAUTY AND POWER. LORD SHIVA, after hearing the HYMN and the beauty, spiritually and devotion put together in THE STOTRAM for LORD SHIVA gave RAVAN the name, who then became known as RAAVAN (One who cried).
SHIVA’S GRIEVED AFTER SATI’S DEATH carried her body and wandered on EARTH in grief. SHIVA danced while singing the HYMN (SHIV TANDAVA). The body parts of Goddess Sati scattered throughout while performing the dance of sorrow. Hence it is believed that the sacred lake of ‘NAINITAL’ was formed when the ‘DIVINE EYES’ of ‘GODDESS SATI’ are said to have fallen and considering ‘NAINI LAKE’ as a ‘SHAKTI PEETH’.
THE NAINITAL CHINA PEAK LANDSLIDE of 1880 occurred in SEPTEMBER, 1880 at the Northern Part Of Nainital Lake. Resulting in the deaths of hundreds and forming the now called ‘THE NAINITAL FLATS’ and ‘THE RE-CONSTRUCTED NAINA DEVI TEMPLE’ on the place where the remains of the temple were found during excavation.
The Mythical Story Of The Pandavas Of Mahabharata & The Island Lake Of Bhimtal
The story of Mahabharata states that during the time ‘The Pandavas’ were in their exile period, they were trekking in the dense pine & oak forests of the Himalayan foothills. The wife of the Pandavas, Draupadi got really thirsty & craved for water.
After searching for miles throughout the jungles of the Kumaon the Pandavas couldn’t find water anywhere. Bheem being the second eldest brother amongst the Pandava Brothers who was well known for his immense strength & power, struck his ‘GADA’ (The Club) on the ground that created a water opening around the place where the brothers & their wife were standing.
The underground water opening emerged in the form of a lake with an island (Now An Island Aquarium & A Restaurant) at the center of the lake. The lake is coined after Bheem – the strong & honorable son of King Pandu’. Bhimsarovar, now the Bhimtal lake is considered as the gateway to the treck of ‘The Kailash Mansarovar’.
Koi Mil Gaya Filming Location – Nainital & Bhimtal
Bollywood’s iconic UFO science-fiction movie Koi… Mil Gaya (2003), starring Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta, was filmed in the breathtaking valleys of Nainital. The movie’s heartwarming story found its charm in the lush hills, serene lakes, and misty forests of Uttarakhand. One of the most famous spots is Saint Joseph’s College, whose colonial-style campus served as Rohit’s school in the film. Several outdoor sequences were captured in and around Bhimtal, adding to the magical setting. These scenic locations not only enhanced the film’s emotional appeal but also turned them into popular tourist attractions for fans and travelers alike.
